The mighty Naga king who ruled the forests of Khandava, Takshaka became one of the most feared serpent monarchs in Indian tradition. His fateful bite ended the life of Emperor Parikshit, forever linking his name to one of the Mahabharata's most enduring legends.

Biography

Takshaka appears prominently in the Mahabharata as one of the greatest kings of the Naga race. Ruling over the Khandava region, he was renowned for immense strength, supernatural power and cunning. Feared by kings and respected among the Nagas, he embodied both royal authority and the deadly might of the serpent race. When Agni consumed the Khandava Forest with the aid of Krishna and Arjuna, Takshaka was absent, but many Nagas perished in the conflagration. The destruction of his realm became one of the defining tragedies associated with his reign and deepened the long-standing hostility between the Nagas and the descendants of the Pandavas. Years later, the sage Sringin cursed Emperor Parikshit to die from the bite of Takshaka after the king had insulted the sage Shamika. When the appointed day arrived, Takshaka overcame every attempt to protect the emperor. Disguising his approach and ultimately delivering the Fatal Serpent Bite, he fulfilled the curse exactly as foretold. Parikshit's death provoked his son Janamejaya to perform the great snake sacrifice, intending to destroy the entire Naga race. Takshaka sought refuge with Indra, yet even the king of the gods could not stop the sacrifice. Only the intervention of the sage Astika brought the ritual to an end, preserving Takshaka and the remaining Nagas.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Takshaka was one of the foremost Naga kings and ruler of the Khandava Forest. He belonged to the ancient serpent race descended from Kashyapa and Kadru. His fame spread across Bharata through his rule, his survival of the Khandava catastrophe and his role in fulfilling the curse upon Emperor Parikshit through the Fatal Serpent Bite.

Personality

Takshaka is portrayed as proud, intelligent and relentless. He acted decisively, valued the survival of his people and possessed the patience to wait for the right moment before striking. Though feared for his lethal power, he remained every bit a sovereign determined to protect the dignity of the Naga race.
