Trikuta Mountain carried the golden city of Lanka upon its peaks. It watched Ravana's rise, Hanuman's arrival and the final battle that ended the reign of the rakshasa king.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Trikuta Mountain is the great mountain upon which the city of Lanka is built. Surrounded by the ocean and crowned by fortified walls, towers and palaces, it forms the natural foundation of Ravana's capital. Its height and steep slopes make Lanka difficult to approach, strengthening the city's already formidable defenses. When Hanuman crosses the ocean, he first reaches Trikuta Mountain before entering Lanka. From its heights he observes the city's magnificent buildings, guarded gates and bustling streets under the cover of night. The mountain becomes the silent witness to his secret mission to locate Sita in the Ashoka Grove. Later, after Rama's army crosses the ocean, the great war unfolds upon and around the slopes of Trikuta. The mountain overlooks battles involving the vanaras and the rakshasas, the fall of mighty warriors and finally the duel between Rama and Ravana. Though kingdoms change, the mountain itself remains unmoved. Trikuta Mountain symbolizes permanence amid changing fortunes. Ravana believes his city to be unassailable because of the mountain beneath it, yet the Ramayana reminds its readers that no fortress is stronger than dharma. The highest walls cannot protect a kingdom built upon adharma.
