Princess of the Nagas · Wife of Arjuna · Guardian of the Pandava Lineage

Mahabharata SagaCharacter33.0

The Naga princess of the underwater kingdom, Ulupi rescued Arjuna from the Ganga and later became his wife. Gifted with mystical powers and profound wisdom, she revived Arjuna after his battle with Babruvahana, playing a vital role in preserving the Pandava lineage.

Biography

Ulupi appears in the Mahabharata as the Naga princess, daughter of the Naga king Kauravya. While Arjuna was living in exile, she saw him bathing in the Ganga, drew him into the underwater realm of the Nagas and declared her wish to marry him. Arjuna accepted, and the two were united according to dharma. Before Arjuna departed, Ulupi granted him the Water Blessing, a boon by which no aquatic creature could overcome him. Their union also produced a son, Iravan, who would later fight and sacrifice his life for the Pandava cause during the Kurukshetra War. Years after the great war, Ulupi understood that Arjuna still carried the consequence of slaying Bhishma, who was one of the Vasus in human form. During Yudhishthira's Ashvamedha campaign, she guided events so that Babruvahana, Arjuna's son by Chitrangada, confronted and defeated his father in battle. This fulfilled the lingering curse upon Arjuna without destroying him. After the duel, Ulupi used the Nagamani to restore Arjuna to life. Her wisdom transformed apparent tragedy into reconciliation, reuniting Arjuna, Chitrangada and Babruvahana. Through compassion, foresight and mystical knowledge, Ulupi ensured the survival of the Pandava lineage while honoring both dharma and destiny.
