Uttara

Princess of Matsya · Wife of Abhimanyu · Mother of Parikshit

Mahabharata SagaCharacter26.0

Princess of Matsya, wife of Abhimanyu, and mother of Emperor Parikshit, Uttara preserved the future of the Kuru dynasty after the devastation of Kurukshetra. Protected by Lord Krishna before Parikshit's birth, she became a symbol of hope, resilience, and the continuation of Dharma.

Biography

Uttara appears in the Mahabharata as the daughter of King Virata and Queen Sudeshna of Matsya. During the Pandavas' year of incognito exile, she was taught dance and music by Brihannala, who was Arjuna living in disguise. When her identity as Arjuna's teacher was revealed, Arjuna declined her hand in marriage because he regarded her as his daughter through that relationship. Instead, she was married to his son Abhimanyu. Uttara's happiness was short-lived. During the Kurukshetra War, Abhimanyu was slain after being surrounded inside the Chakravyuha. Left widowed while carrying his child, Uttara became the final hope of the Pandava lineage at a time when nearly every heir of the Kuru house had perished. After the war, Ashwatthama released the Brahmastra to destroy the unborn child in Uttara's womb. Seeking refuge in Krishna, Uttara prayed for the life of her unborn son. Krishna protected the child from the weapon's destructive power, preserving the last surviving heir of the Kuru dynasty. Uttara gave birth to Parikshit, who later became emperor of Hastinapura. Through her endurance and unwavering faith, the royal lineage of the Pandavas continued after the greatest war of the age. Her story is remembered not for battlefield victories but for preserving the future of dharma itself.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Uttara was born as the princess of Matsya, the daughter of King Virata and Queen Sudeshna. She grew up within the royal court and received instruction from Brihannala, unaware that her teacher was the disguised Arjuna. Krishna's Protection became the defining moment of her life when the unborn Parikshit was saved from Ashwatthama's Brahmastra. Through that miracle, Uttara became the mother of the future emperor and the guardian of the Kuru dynasty's future.

Personality

Uttara is remembered as gentle, devoted and resilient. She endured profound personal loss without abandoning faith or righteousness. Her courage lay not in warfare but in protecting hope when the future of an entire dynasty rested within her.
