Vajradamshtra

Vajradamshtra appears in the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> as one of Ravana's distinguished military commanders during the great war for Lanka. Unlike sorcerers who relied upon illusion or generals who remained behind the lines, he entered battle personally, leading Rakshasa forces against the advancing Vanara army. When Ravana dispatched his commanders to halt Rama's campaign, Vajradamshtra marched into combat with confidence, commanding disciplined Rakshasa battalions while displaying exceptional skill with his weapons. His reputation rested upon relentless aggression, battlefield courage and the ability to inspire those who fought under his command. His greatest battle came against Angada, the son of Vali. The duel was fierce, with both warriors displaying tremendous strength and determination. Vajradamshtra fought with bow, sword and mace, refusing to retreat even after suffering heavy blows. Angada ultimately gained the advantage and slew him, removing one of Lanka's strongest commanders from the war. The death of Vajradamshtra weakened Lanka's defenses and strengthened the confidence of the Vanara army. Though he fought for the cause of adharma, the epic remembers him as a fearless commander whose loyalty to Ravana never faltered, even in the face of certain defeat.

Valmiki's Ramayana introduces Vajradamshtra as one of Ravana's trusted Rakshasa commanders during the war for Lanka. His rise within the Rakshasa ranks reflects his exceptional martial ability, battlefield discipline and unwavering devotion to his king.
