Varunastra – Weapon of water granted by Varuna.

The Varunastra is the celestial weapon associated with Varuna, the guardian of the cosmic waters and one of the ancient Vedic deities. Counted among the great elemental astras of the <i>Mahabharata</i>, it commands the overwhelming force of water rather than relying upon fire, wind or lightning. The surviving critical <i>Mahabharata</i> recognizes the Varunastra as one of the divine weapons possessed by accomplished warriors trained in celestial warfare. Its greatest traditional role is to oppose and extinguish fiery astras. Instead of meeting destruction with greater destruction, it overwhelms blazing weapons beneath immense torrents summoned through sacred invocation. The Varunastra is remembered for transforming the battlefield itself. Torrential rain, surging waters and flood-like currents disrupt enemy formations, extinguish flames and deprive opponents of momentum. Unlike weapons that focus upon a single strike, its strength lies in reshaping the entire field through the irresistible force of water. The weapon reflects the nature of Varuna himself. Water nourishes life, but it can also drown armies, erode fortifications and silence even the fiercest flames. The Varunastra therefore represents both restraint and overwhelming power, restoring balance when destructive fire threatens to consume everything before it.

The Varunastra derives its identity from Varuna, lord of the cosmic waters. The surviving critical <i>Mahabharata</i> does not preserve a separate narrative describing the creation of the astra or identifying its first mortal wielder. Like the other celestial astras, the Varunastra belongs to the sacred body of divine weapons transmitted through mantra and disciplined instruction. Its traditional role as the natural answer to fiery astras arises from the elemental opposition between water and fire preserved throughout epic tradition.

The Varunastra embodies calm authority. It does not rush into battle with explosive violence. Instead, it advances with patient certainty, overwhelming resistance through persistence, balance and the inexhaustible strength of water.
