Biography

Vasudeva appears in the Mahabharata and is described in greater detail in the Harivamsha, Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana as a leading prince of the Yadava clan. Married to Devaki and Rohini among his wives, he became the father of Balarama and Krishna, whose births shaped the destiny of Bharata. After Kamsa imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki, the tyrant slew their first six children because of a prophecy that Devaki's eighth son would bring about his death. When Krishna was born, the prison doors opened by divine will, the guards fell into deep sleep and Vasudeva carried the infant across the flooded Yamuna to Gokula, exchanging him with the newborn daughter of Yashoda and Nanda. Throughout Krishna's youth, Vasudeva endured imprisonment with patience and unwavering faith. After Kamsa's death, he was reunited with his sons and resumed his place among the Yadavas. His wisdom continued to guide the family during the rise of Dvaraka and the many challenges that followed. Vasudeva's greatness lies not in conquest but in steadfast righteousness. He protected the future of the Yadava lineage through courage, restraint and complete trust in the divine purpose entrusted to him.
