Vibhishana

Born to the sage Vishrava and the Rakshasi Kaikesi, Vibhishana was the youngest brother of Ravana and Kumbhakarna. Unlike the rulers and warriors who surrounded him, he pursued righteousness above ambition. Even while living in Lanka's royal court, he remained devoted to truth, self-control and justice, earning respect for wisdom rather than fear. When Ravana abducted Sita, Vibhishana repeatedly urged his brother to return her to Rama and end the conflict before Lanka was destroyed. He warned that Rama was no ordinary prince and that no kingdom could prosper through adharma. Ravana rejected every warning, mocked his younger brother and finally banished him from the royal court. With a handful of loyal companions, Vibhishana crossed the sea and sought refuge with Rama. Many Vanara leaders doubted his intentions, fearing deception. Rama refused to abandon one who sincerely sought protection, declaring that anyone who came seeking refuge would be accepted without fear. From that moment, Vibhishana became one of Rama's most trusted allies. Throughout the war, Vibhishana's knowledge of Lanka proved invaluable. He identified the strengths of Ravana's commanders, revealed the importance of interrupting Indrajit's Nikumbhila sacrifice and guided Rama's army through the kingdom's defenses. His counsel repeatedly turned impossible battles into victories. After Ravana's death, Rama refused to claim Lanka for himself. Instead, he crowned Vibhishana its rightful king, restoring righteous rule to the island. Vibhishana's story is not one of betrayal but of choosing dharma when loyalty and righteousness could no longer walk the same path.

Valmiki's Ramayana identifies Vibhishana as the son of Vishrava and Kaikesi, making him the younger brother of Ravana and Kumbhakarna. Unlike his brothers, Vibhishana was naturally inclined toward virtue and performed austerities that pleased Brahma. Brahma granted Vibhishana the boon that his mind would remain firmly established in dharma even during the greatest trials. That blessing shaped every important decision of his life and ultimately led him from Ravana's court to Rama's side.

Vibhishana is calm, compassionate and unwavering in principle. He speaks difficult truths even when they bring personal loss and never allows anger or pride to cloud his judgment. Though deeply devoted to his family, he believes righteousness outweighs blood ties when the two come into conflict. His greatest strength is the courage to stand alone for what is right.
