The prosperous kingdom of King Virata, where the Pandavas lived incognito during the final year of their exile. Hidden beneath disguises, they protected the kingdom from powerful enemies before revealing their true identities on the eve of the Kurukshetra War.

Biography

The Kingdom of Virata, also known as Matsya, was ruled by the just King Virata and stood among the respected kingdoms of ancient Bharata. Prosperous in agriculture and cattle wealth, it became one of the safest and most honorable realms during the years leading to the Kurukshetra War. After completing twelve years of forest exile, the Pandavas entered Virata for the final year of their exile, during which they were required to remain undiscovered. Each assumed a different identity. Yudhishthira became Kanka, Bhima served as the cook Ballava, Arjuna lived as the dance teacher Brihannala, Nakula tended horses, Sahadeva cared for cattle, and Draupadi entered Queen Sudeshna's service as Sairandhri. The kingdom faced danger when Kichaka, Virata's powerful commander, harassed Draupadi. Bhima secretly slew Kichaka, protecting her while preserving the Pandavas' hidden identities. Later, when the Kauravas raided Virata's cattle, Arjuna retrieved the Gandiva from its hiding place in the Shami tree, revealed himself to Prince Uttara and defeated the Kuru warriors, completing the final day of the exile without breaking its conditions. After their identities were revealed, King Virata welcomed the Pandavas openly and forged a lasting alliance with them. His daughter Uttara married Abhimanyu, strengthening the bond between Matsya and the Pandavas. Virata became one of the principal allies of the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra War, where both King Virata and his sons fought for their cause.
