Yaksha (Dharma in disguise) (Yaksha Prashna episode)

Yaksha · Dharma in Disguise · Examiner of Righteousness

Mahabharata SagaCharacter110.0

Appearing as the mysterious guardian of a sacred lake, the Yaksha challenged Yudhishthira with profound questions on life, duty, and righteousness. Revealing himself as Dharma, he rewarded wisdom above strength, making the Yaksha Prashna one of the Mahabharata's greatest spiritual lessons.

Biography

During the Pandavas' exile, a desperate search for water led Nakula to a beautiful forest lake. Before he could drink, an unseen Yaksha warned that the water could only be taken after answering his questions. Ignoring the warning, Nakula drank and immediately fell lifeless. Sahadeva, Arjuna, and Bhima met the same fate when each dismissed the mysterious voice. At last Yudhishthira arrived. Instead of reaching for the water, he listened. Accepting the Yaksha's challenge, he answered a long series of profound questions concerning truth, duty, knowledge, life, death, and the nature of righteousness. The dialogue, remembered as the Yaksha Prashna, became one of the Mahabharata's greatest philosophical passages. Satisfied with Yudhishthira's wisdom, the Yaksha granted him the chance to restore one brother to life. Rather than choosing mighty Bhima or indispensable Arjuna, Yudhishthira chose Nakula, explaining that justice required one son of each of his father's two wives to survive. His answer revealed impartial righteousness above personal advantage. The Yaksha then revealed his true identity as Dharma, also known as Yama, the divine father of Yudhishthira. Pleased by his son's unwavering commitment to justice, Dharma restored all four brothers to life and blessed the Pandavas before they continued their exile. The episode teaches that wisdom, humility, and righteousness prevail where strength alone cannot.

Origin

The Mahabharata presents the mysterious guardian of the sacred lake as a Yaksha who conceals his true identity. Only after Yudhishthira successfully answers the Yaksha Prashna does the guardian reveal himself to be Dharma, the divine embodiment of righteousness and the father of Yudhishthira. By appearing in disguise, Dharma transforms an ordinary moment of thirst into a test of character. The trial proves that true kingship rests not upon power alone but upon justice, self-control, and moral discernment.

Personality

As the Yaksha, Dharma is calm, patient, and uncompromising. He never seeks conflict for its own sake. Every question is designed to reveal character rather than knowledge alone. His judgments are impartial, rewarding humility, wisdom, and adherence to dharma above physical might or worldly success.
